REB Design Web Site

REB Design Web Site

The original www.rebdesign.com.au web site was the first site I ever created. I had no web design experience at the time, but I was employed by REB Design and the task of building its web site fell to me since I was the most ‘computer nerdy’ employee.

What I feel is most notable about this site, and the reason I am proud of it, is its attention to detail. The navigation system went through many iterations before arriving at a wonderfully simple result. To avoid the slow bit-by-bit loading of the colour images (at a time when modems were typically 28kbit/s), a small black and white image was displayed while the full colour image loaded in the background. When I realised that the frame-based design was poor for search engines, the site was updated so that a link to a search engine-friendly single page would properly reassemble the frameset around it. (For example, open the following URL in Internet Explorer: www.alisterjones.com/sites/reb-design/identities/item02.htm.)

I believe that this attention to detail shows that the site was built up to a professional standard, rather than down to my novice skill level. I would like to think that I continue to build web sites up to a professional standard, all the while learning any new technologies needed to achieve that standard.
